Details

This is a two-day course introducing water-based woodblock printing, a non-toxic traditional Japanese technique that doesn’t need a press. This course is great for both beginners and those who have some knowledge of this technique.

You will learn about the beautiful paper, wood and tools used for this method, as well as how to transfer your image to a woodblock, and how to carve it out using various knives and gouges. You will learn how to register your blocks and print the image on dampened paper.

You will first make a black and white print, then on day two you will make a simple print with two colours. We will work with blocks approx. 22 x 15 cm.

Materials

Woodblocks 22 x 15 cm, Japanese papers, black sumi ink, pigments, nori rice paste, sets of carving tools, various baren, tracing paper, water misters are provided.

What to bring

You can bring a sketchbook, a pencil, and an apron or old shirt. If you have some ideas for a design 22 x 15 cm that is not too complicated that is great. Or you can use one of the black and white, or two-colour designs, that can be sent to you in advance to give you some ideas.

Lunch, tea or coffee, is provided.
